STORYLINE NOTES:  (By Brandon)

   Robotech (a series nearly all anime fans have seen, if not
liked) was derived from the Macross television series.  This script
is to Macross, the movie.  Therefore there are many descrepencies
between characters, and actions, in the series.
   The following notes are on the major characters, and how they
relate to Robotech, etc.  Names that require no speculation, or
clarification, are not included.

HIKARU, ICHIJO: (Rick Hunter)
MISA, HAYAES: (Lisa Hayes)
BRITAI: (Breetai)
BORG BODOLZA: (Lord Dolza)
KAIFUN: (Lynn Kyle)
ATTILA: I believe that the Protoculture city, Attila, is supposed
to be the fabled Atlantis.  However, I may be incorrect.

OTHER NOTES:
   When I re-edited this, I primarily reduced the size of the
document, by placing it in a different script style.  This changed
it from 70+ pages, to 52.  I did not delete any text, nor did I
change any of the dialogue.  I only edited some sentence structure
in scene descriptions, where it was poor grammar.
   I would like to apologize to the initial translators, for
editing without their permission, but I was unable to contact them.
   I would also like to add, that this is simply a translation
script, so english speaking fans can enjoy the storyline, as much
as they enjoy the animation.  In no way is it meant to be a form of
copyright infringement, nor is it meant to be used for a profit.

      On the bridge of the ZENTRADI COMMANDER BRITAI'S cruiser,
      BRITAI 7018 and his advisor EXEDOR 4970 examine some
      objects captured from an enemy ship.  Initially, they have
      suspected that the ship belongs to the all-female
      MELTRANDI forces.  But the objects from the ship do not
      appear to belong to them.

BRITAI: Do you say that that vessel does not belong to Meltran?

      >>The Meltrandi.  Meltran simply means "woman," and when
      the Zentradi speak of Meltran, they're almost always
      referring to the Meltrandi.<<

EXEDOR: During our previous battles, we found numerous objects of
   microne size from the remains of the enemy ships. I shall show.
   Observe.

      EXEDOR extends one of his tentacles, manipulating a
      vending machine.

BRITAI: Microne size . . . indeed, it seems these do not belong to
   Meltran.

EXEDOR: Furthermore . . . a number of our soldiers received
   strangesound signals near the enemy vessel and became unable to
   fight.

BRITAI: Unable to fight? What could they have aboard that ship?

                              * * *

      From out of the dark of its orbit around Titan, the SDF-1
      MACROSS appears (we also see the opening "Macross" title).
      The ZENTRADI FORCES have been hunting this ship for over five
      months since its ill-fated hyperspace fold operation sent it
      away to Pluto. It has been attempting to return to Earth,
      fighting its way through. On the bridge of the MACROSS,
      LIEUTENANT MISA issues flight instructions to the VALKYRIE
      squads to intercept incoming ZENTRADI PODS.

MISA: This is Delta One to ARMD-01: check on your ASK and adjust to
   the proper coordinates. Squads Skull, Angel, and Apollo: start
   your engines and prepare to launch. Stand by.

      HIKARU'S fighter, the VF-1A SUPER VALKYRIE, is swung outon
      a launch arm, the ARMD-1, ready to take off.

LAUNCH CREW All: systems green. Good luck to you.

HIKARU: Thank you!

   HIKARU and some other fighters proceed to launch into space.
   Inside the ship, the people within MACROSS CITY go about
   their daily business.  We can hear the sound of music and
   singing throughout the CITY as we come closer and closer to
   a lighted amphitheater, where shipboard superstarlet LYNN
   MINMAY is giving her very first live performance.

      SONG LYRICS:
          Two big hearts joined in the blue sky.
          It is a love sign.
          I love you.
          You love me?
          But he has a crush on his plane.
          KYUN KYUN,
          KYUN KYUN.
          My boyfriend is a pilot.
      >>KYUN, is a Japanese sound for engine noise, like our
      "Zoom"<<

MINMAY: Good Evening everyone, I'm Lynn Minmay!  Tonight is my
   first concert and I thank everyone here for supporting me!

MAN IN CROWD: Minmay!

      >>Voice by Director Masaharu Kawamori?  This man, who
      directed this movie, is reputed to have had a crush on Minmay
      and Misa.<<

MINMAY: Thank You!  It has been five months since our MACROSS left
   Earth.  During that time, many unhappy incidents have occurred.
   But tonight, let's forget such sad things and enjoy!

CROWD: Yay!

MINMAY: And now, I will sing a medley from my soon-to-be-released
   first album.

      SONG LYRICS  "Little White Dragon"
          Remember, The silver wings that dance in the great sky.
          Shao Pai Long!
          Shao Pai Long!
          Remember, The the burning eyes that tear apart the
               darkness.
          Shao Pai Long!
          Shao Pai Long!
          The man who came to seek the diseased city, Evirus.
          Slayer! Slayer! Slayer!
          Shao Pai...

      The music suddenly stops. MINMAY and the crowd senses an
      emergency.

MINMAY: What?

PA SYSTEM ANNOUNCEMENT - Attention!  Attention!  Our ship is to
   make a Transformation in three minutes!  Go to the nearest
   shelter as soon as possible!

      Cut to a shot of the crowd.

FIRST MAN IN CROWD - Transformation!

SECOND MAN IN CROWD - What? Transformation?

      MINMAY is confused.

MINMAY: Uh?

      The amphitheater closes itself up.  We cut to a long shot
      of Titan with Saturn in the background.  A squad of
      VALKYRIES appear out of the distance.  The ZENTRADI are
      staging another attack on the MACROSS to destroy it.  MISA
      sends out orders to the squad and can be heard in the
      cockpits of the fighters.

MISA: Delta One to squads Skull, Angel, and Apollo: course
   correction to 308 + A15.  Enemy estimated to be within firing
   range in thirty seconds.  Prepare to intercept the enemy.

ROY: Skull Leader to Squad: you heard the lady, so assume
   intercept formation 17.  Understand?

      HIKARU and the others fire forty-eight missiles at the
      incoming ZENTRADI BATTLE PODS.  HIKARU nervously watches
      his status board to see how many of the missiles hit.  The
      majority of them find their marks. We cut to HAYAO.

HAYAO (Shouting): Got them!

ROY: Don't celebrate so prematurely.  Match their speed before
   firing at them.  Now break formation and reverse acceleration!

SQUAD: Roger!

      The squad breaks formation.  The sudden change in velocity
      jolts HIKARU as he executes the retro-thrust maneuver.

HIKARU: Uh!

      He looks at his heads-up display to find that his
      VALKYRIE'S computer has locked onto three ZENTRADI BATTLE PODS.

HIKARU: There are three of them!

      HIKARU fires and wipes out the three BATTLE PODS.  But, he
      soon finds three more BATTLE PODS attacking from behind.

HIKARU: They're for you, Max!

MAX: Roger!

      MAX destroys the PODS following HIKARU.  One of the
      ZENTRADI leaves his crippled BATTLE POD, trying in vain to
      punch MAX'S VALKYRIE with his first. MAX grabs the
      ZENTRADI and blows his head away.

MAX: Three of them down!

HIKARU: Wow!

HAYAO: He's a genius!

      HIKARU and HAYAO both see another ZENTRADI POD trying to
      flee. HIKARU is already off in pursuit.

HIKARU: I can do that too!

      The ZENTRADI fires at HIKARU, but HIKARU maneuvers out of
      the way. HIKARU fires and destroys the last BATTLE POD.

HIKARU: Got him!

      ROY receives an emergency message from MISA on the bridge
      of the MACROSS.

ROY: What did you say?

MISA: This is Delta One. A large battle vessel has just
   materialized out of a fold operation and is headed directly
   towards us! Scanners detect a large number of enemy battle pods
   on board!  Emergency! Prepare to engage the enemy!

      All the fighters rush back to the MACROSS.

HIKARU: The battle pods here were decoys!

      HIKARU arrives back at the MACROSS just in time to stop a
      ZENTRADI soldier in a BATTLE SUIT from firing on the
      helpless bridge crew.  Even though HIKARU has just saved
      MISA'S life, she scolds him for being out of his assigned
      position with the SKULL SQUAD.

MISA: Delta One to Skull Eleven: what do you think you are doing?
   You're supposed to be attacking the enemy!  Follow the
   coordinates I gave you, and don't go wandering off again!

      Drifting in front of the bridge window, HIKARU responds.

HIKARU: Are you kidding?  I just saved your life!  Is that any way
   to speak to me?

MISA: Is that the way to speak to your superior?  You'd better
   follow my orders, or I'll have you thrown in the brig!  Don't
   disobey, you rookie!

HIKARU: But they were going to blast you!  What did you want me to
   do?  Sit out here and do nothing?

MISA: Let Defense Group Two handle it!  What did you expect to
   attack by coming here anyway?  This is an order!

HIKARU: No time for that!  I'm going for the enemy pods that
   intruded into the ship.

      HIKARU turns his VALKYRIE around, heading back into the
      battle.

MISA: Wait!  Who does he think is superior?  Man or woman?

      We hear sounds of the battle outside from within the
      MACROSS. MINMAY and her brother KAIFUN are in a shelter
      with some other people waiting for the end of the battle.

MINMAY: I wonder if we'll survive today?

      A fan sitting next to them gathers the nerve to ask MINMAY
      for an autograph but falls flat on his face from the shock
      of an explosion.  >>He looks suspiciously like director
      Kawamori, see previous footnote.<<

KAIFUN: It's more violent than ever today.

      Three ZENTRADI soldiers in BATTLE PODS rip their way inside
      to the CITY. Two of them land on the streets, but the tug of
      the artificial gravity catches the third soldier off guard.
      He falls on top of one of the buildings, effectively crushing
      it.  It happens to be the building housing the shelter that
      MINMAY and KAIFUN are in.  The POD'S head rips through the
      ceiling where they are seated.  The people inside run. MINMAY
      and KAIFUN hit the street trying to find shelter, but one of
      the soldiers spot them.  The soldiers are shocked to see the
      sight of KAIFUN and MINMAY (a man and woman) running
      together.

ZENTRADI #1 (CONDA): What? Zentran and Meltran!

ZENTRADI #2 (LOLI): Zentran and Meltran?

CONDA: Zentran and Meltran in same place!

LOLI: Unthinkable!

CONDA: Un . . . unthinkable!

      MINMAY and KAIFUN are still running on the streets, trying
      to escape the soldiers.  But it is too late to get to a
      shelter, as the ship is only a few seconds away from
      changing into BATTLE CONFIGURATION.

PA ANNOUNCEMENT: Transformation in five
   Seconds...four...three...two...

      As they run, MINMAY falls.  KAIFUN stops running, turning
      to help her.

KAIFUN: Minmay!

PA ANNOUNCEMENT: One...TRANSFORM!

      Just as KAIFUN is about to reach for MINMAY, a large
      airlock wall is thrown up between them.  It throws KAIFUN
      back.

KAIFUN: Hey! Oof!

      MINMAY is left on the side of the wall, where the ZENTRADI
      soldiers are. She begins to scream as one of them comes at
      her.  In a control room somewhere aboard the MACROSS,
      technicians relay damage control information to the
      bridge.

TECHNICIAN #1: Gravity system #11 is malfunctioning.

TECHNICIAN #2: Subsystem is also inoperational!

      MINMAY screams as a ZENTRADI soldier reaches for her. But
      HIKARU arrives on the scene with his VALKYRIE in GERWALK
      mode.  His appearance distracts the soldier.  The ZENTRADI
      soldier fires and misses.  HIKARU blows him away.  The
      gravity system in their section gives out.  Everything is
      sent drifting in a free fall down a highway, including
      MINMAY.  She floats down the highway with loose cars and
      other debris.  She screams.  HIKARU manages to catch up to
      her in his VF-1A.  He manipulates one of his GERWALK'S
      arms to catch her.  He breathes a sigh of relief.

HIKARU: Whew! WHAT?

      He looks up and realizes...too late.  His GERWALK is about
      to collide with the back of the compartment.  He can do
      nothing but shield MINMAY with the manipulator arms of his
      GERWALK as they crash into a sealed-off area of the ship.
      Airlock doors close behind them.  Meanwhile while on
      patrol on the other side of Titan, a CAT'S EYE
      reconnaissance craft spots an enemy ship coming out of a
      hyperspace fold to attack the MACROSS.  It relays the
      information to the bridge.

CAT'S EYE: Enemy ship is approaching; course 107.

       On the bridge of MACROSS, now TRANSFORMED to
       BATTLE MODE...

MISA: Course confirmed.  Activate lock-on.

CLAUDIA: Energy level rising.  Guns, stand by.  MISA Increase the
   energy to the main guns...stand-by.

CAPTAIN GLOVAL: FIRE!

      A burst of energy leaps forward from the main guns of the
      MACROSS, destroying the incoming ZENTRADI cruiser.  The
      ZENTRADI BATTLE PODS and other small ships begin to flee
      from the MACROSS.  Inside a sealed-off area, HIKARU gets
      out of his VALKYRIE.  With a flashlight, he surveys the
      damage.  His light illuminates the unconscious form of
      LYNN MINMAY near the wreckage. He looks her over,
      surprised.

HIKARU: Could it be?

      He realizes the girl he has just saved with his VALKYRIE
      is the famous starlet LYNN MINMAY,  of whom he is a fan.

HIKARU: It's the real thing!

      HIKARU drops the flashlight and steps on it, breaking it.
      MINMAY begins to wake up.

MINMAY: Uhn...what?

      HIKARU is startled by MINMAY waking up.

HIKARU: Huh?

MINMAY: You're...?

HIKARU: Yes?

MINMAY: You're the one who rescued me, aren't you?

HIKARU: Yes! I'm U. N. SPACY Valkyrie Skull Squadron Pilot,
        E-Ensign Ichijo, Hikaru.

MINMAY: Thank you, Mr. Ensign.

HIKARU: I-It was no problem at all. I'm a big fan of you.

MINMAY: I am very pleased to meet you. Do you listen to any of my songs?

HIKARU: Y-Yes...all the time.

MINMAY (Looking around) - Hm...do you know where we are, Mr. Ensign?

HIKARU (Producing a pen and his handkerchief) - Uh...could I please
        have your autograph?

MINMAY: What? Oh, sure...(signing, pen cap in her mouth)...here you go.

HIKARU: Wow!  Thanks...we fell into the engine block.

MINMAY (Looking over the wrecked GERWALK) - Is there a way out?

HIKARU: I'll go look.  I don't think there's any.

MINMAY: Can't you break down the wall?

HIKARU: That's impossible.  It's made of hyper-carbon.

      HIKARU tries his wrist communicator.

HIKARU: No, there's too much static.

MINMAY: Can you get the plane's radio to work?

HIKARU: No...that's damaged too.

MINMAY: Oh.

      She begins to walk around, shouting.

MINMAY: Is anybody out there?  Anybody?  No one?  I guess not.

      She sits down on some of the wreckage.

MINMAY: Ah...I'm so happy that I'm alone at last.  I'm tired of my
        over-booked schedule.

HIKARU: Huh?

      The ship begins to move out of its orbit from Titan.  The
      jolt scares MINMAY so that she grasps onto HIKARU.

MINMAY: Huh!  What was that, Ensign?

HIKARU: The MACROSS must be breaking away from the orbit of Titan.

MINMAY: What?

HIKARU: Really.

      Without any warning, the artificial gravity in their
      section gives out. MINMAY and HIKARU begin to drift.

MINMAY: Eek!

HIKARU: The artificial gravity system is malfunctioning.

      MINMAY begins to drift away faster, and HIKARU attempts to
      catch up to her.

MINMAY: Ah!

HIKARU: W-Wait, Miss Minmay!

      HIKARU catches up to MINMAY.  In his attempt to stop her,
      he accidentally touches her breast.

MINMAY: Hey!  Let me go!

      She pushes away from HIKARU. The force sends her tumbling.

HIKARU (Looking at his hands) - It was an accident!  A mistake!

      HIKARU, trained for activity in zero-G environments, makes
      a maneuver to bring himself down to the floor by throwing
      his legs forward and down.

MINMAY: Never mind! Do something to help me!

HIKARU: Swing your legs forward and stop them slowly!

      MINMAY tries the move.

MINMAY: Like this?  Wow.

      She begins to drift back down to the floor.

MINMAY: Hey! It worked! (Giggles) This is fun.

      Before HIKARU has a chance to say anything, MINMAY tries the
      opposite maneuver, launching herself into the air again.  She
      begins to drift to a darkened part of the huge room.

HIKARU: Wha...! Miss Minmay!  Don't go there!

MINMAY: Wow.

HIKARU: Hey!  Miss Minmay!  Stop!

      MINMAY Giggles.  HIKARU'S flight suit starts to glow,
      reminding him of the dark. He tries to find his
      flashlight.

HIKARU: Dammit, I forgot...I broke the flashlight.

      MINMAY'S dress begins to glow.  She giggles.  HIKARU
      stares amazed.

HIKARU: Wow!

MINMAY: Look!  look!  My dress, it's the latest fashion light holography!

      They reach a different, lighter part of the sealed
      bulkhead. There is all sorts of junk that had followed
      them in from the CITY before the doors closed.  There is
      even a giant tuna fish.
      >>A joke referring to the MACROSS TV series that this movie
      is based on.  Also, let's not forget that tuna in Japanese is
      called "maguro" - a wordplay on "Macross").<<

MINMAY: There's a tuna and some vegetables floating around.
        Look, there is even a doll of me here.

      MINMAY flicks the MINMAY DOLL away with her finger. It
      spins away, head over heels, playing a song that is stored
      in it. Music begins. We see scenes of the stranded
      couple's daily life (since they become stranded for three
      days).  They play with a Coke machine. HIKARU builds
      MINMAY a zero-G shower.  Etc.

      SONG LYRICS
          Zero-G love, zero-G love!
          On my way home from school with my boyfriend,
          At the usual corner where we part,
          Seeing no one's around, He kissed me without warning.
          I pretended to get angry at him
          ...but...but...My head dimmed,
          and my heart pounded.
          Zero-G love, zero-G love.
          Four, three, two, one, zero-G love.
          My body went floating away on the wind.

                             * * *

      On his battle cruiser, BRITAI listens to EXEDOR'S report
      of what has been discovered about the MACROSS during the
      battle. They both study a recording of what the
      infiltrating soldiers saw and did.

EXEDOR: The invasion troop reports the unthinkable. Microns exist
        inside the enemy vessel, as suspected. Furthermore...

BRITAI: Wait!  Increase the magnification.  These are . . . !
        Microns of Zentran and Meltran!

EXEDOR: There is more evidence showing Zentran and Meltran in coexistence.

BRITAI: Not proper!

EXEDOR: I have an unthinkable premonition.  Our ancient combat
        manual says, "Do not harm micrones.  Those who do will perish."

BRITAI: What?  Perish?  Zentran's fleet will perish?  Unthinkable!

      Somewhere within BRITAI'S ship, a group of soldiers
      investigate an unusually small female MICRONE.  Actually,
      it is a MINMAY DOLL with a recording of her song.

ZENTRADI SOLDIER #1: Is this a microne of a microne?

SOLDIERS: Wait! Wait!

      As the soldier taps the doll on its head with his gun, it
      begins to move and sing.  A soldier raises his gun to it but
      is strangely affected by the music. He finds that he can't fire.

      SONG LYRICS:
          KYUN, KYUN! KYUN, KYUN!
          My boyfriend is a pilot.
          It shines and makes a quick dive.
          It fires its engines and makes a quick ascent.
          Pulling a tail of white smoke,
          it draws two big hearts...

SOLDIERS: It moves! Retreat! Retreat!

SOLDIER #1: What is this? Unthinkable!

SOLDIER #2: Weapon sound!

SOLDIER #3: Unthinkable sound!

                              * * *

      Aboard the MACROSS, ROY, MAX, and HAYAO hold a briefing in
      the U. N. SPACY cafeteria.

ROY: There is still no evidence that they are dead,
        so we must continue searching.

MAX: I think we should search the west block today.

ROY: All right, good idea.

      MAX and HAYAO get up to leave, saluting ROY.  ROY gets up and
      walks over to the soda fountain where MISA and CLAUDIA are
      having something to drink and discussing the new recruit,
      HIKARU.

CLAUDIA: That kid still hasn't been found yet, huh?

MISA: Well, he has been missing for three days now. Maybe he got
        scared and deserted.  Isn't that a possibility?  He isn't the
        military type.  You know, a boy will be unhappy for life if he
        chooses the wrong occupation.  Well, what I mean is that he
        would probably do a lot better if he chose another line of work.

CLAUDIA: Well now, you're so critical about everything as always.
        If you keep this up...

MISA: No one will ever want to marry me?

CLAUDIA: Hm...?

MISA: That's all right.  I've stopped thinking of myself as a girl
        for a long time now.

CLAUDIA: Not that again.  Stop talking like an old maid.  But don't
        worry.  I can guarantee you're a great person...

MISA: stares into her soda and her mind flashes back to a
        time when she was in love with a man named Carl Riber, who
        was killed in the service while stationed on Mars Base Sarah.

                              * * *

      In a sealed-off area, MINMAY shares her personal history
      with HIKARU.

MINMAY: And then my mom and dad said, (imitating her father)
        "Don't you know how hard your brother works to take care of
        you?  If you don't behave, I'll disown you!" So, I thanked them
        for taking care of me and told them that I was going to work
        very hard and one day become a famous singing star.

HIKARU: And then?

MINMAY: Then I left home and came here.

HIKARU: Wow, you're pretty brave.

MINMAY: But I think I was too rough on them. I just hope that they
        are all right.

HIKARU: Aren't they on the MACROSS?

MINMAY: They're on Earth.

HIKARU: Earth...

MINMAY: Do you know what has been happening on Earth?  What it has
        become like?

HIKARU: The official announcement says heavy radio jamming is
        preventing us from making contact.

MINMAY: I mean, the truth.

HIKARU: The Zentradi bombarded Earth so heavily. I doubt anyone
        remained safe.

MINMAY: So...

HIKARU: But don't worry.  We'll be home in only a month.

MINMAY: Is that so?

HIKARU: Yes.  By the way, could I ask you?  (Asking candidly,
        trying to change the subject.)

MINMAY: What?

HIKARU: The other day, on TV...

MINMAY: TV?

HIKARU: Yes. The TV show "For Nights When You Want to Cry." There
        are rumors floating around about that other actor.

MINMAY: Do you also believe those rumors?  They're only stories
        made up by the magazine publisher.  PEOPLE, eh?

HIKARU: Is that true?  The love scene seemed so real.

MINMAY: (Giggle) I was just acting. It's business, you know.

HIKARU: No way!

MINMAY: Want me to show you?

HIKARU: Show me?

      MINMAY Giggles, Floats up to HIKARU and embraces him.
      HIKARU is taken by surprise.

MINMAY: Oh, Hikaru...

HIKARU: Wha...?

MINMAY: Hikaru, I've loved you all my life.  Tell me you love me.

HIKARU: But...but...

MINMAY: You don't love me, do you?

HIKARU: Yes...yes, I do love you.

MINMAY: Do you, really?

HIKARU: Yes, really.

MINMAY: I'm so glad. (She kisses him.)

      While they are embraced in their kiss, they fail to notice
      that the artificial gravity in their area has begun to
      return and they have begun drifting to the floor.
      Although why they drift from a horizontal back to a
      vertical position is still a mystery.  The safety door to
      their isolated area are unlocked.  A group of reporters
      rush in, snapping photographs of the couple locked in
      their floating embrace.

REPORTER: (OBVIOUSLY, a PEOPLE magazine reporter.) A scoop!

      Minmay and Hikaru are startled

MINMAY & HIKARU: Ah...?

      Later, in a U. N. SPACY officer's lounge, Misa scolds Hikaru
      about his conduct with Minmay.  Hikaru sits looking
      depressed, while Misa stands over him.

MISA: The PR department told me to specially pardon you because you
      rescued Miss Minmay. But any further disobedience of orders
      will lead to strict punishments.  Remember that.

HIKARU: OK...

MISA: What is the matter? Are you dissatisfied?

HIKARU: No.

MISA: (Annoyed by Hikaru's rebellious attitude)  From now on you
        had better watch your conduct. Do you hear? DO YOU HEAR?

      HIKARU quickly stands up and looking very stiff, stands at
      attention and salutes her.

HIKARU: Yes, sir!

      MISA, frustrated with him since he reminds her of her own
      strict military background (also shown to us behind HIKARU is
      a recruiting poster featuring MINMAY), turns and walks out of
      the room in a huff. HIKARU slumps down in his chair.

HIKARU: So mean . . . I wonder how she can still be a woman?

      Later, ROY and the guys rush into the lounge to HIKARU to celebrate
      his rescue and his time spent with the star, LYNN MINMAY. They all
      surround him at the table and press him for information about
      his "adventure."

ROY: You did it . . . you did it, Hikaru!

HIKARU: Roy?

HAYAO: (Tweaking HIKARU: on the cheek) You, you womanizer! Boy, you
        did pretty good!

ROY: So, how did you enjoy our idol, Minmay?

      HIKARU looks at them, confused.

MAX: (Mockingly didactic) I didn't know you were such an
        unscrupulous character. I'm disappointed in you.

HAYAO: Tell us what happened.

HIKARU: I didn't do anything.

HAYAO: Really! Do you actually think for one moment that we would
        believe that?

MAX: You will have to accept the responsibilities.

      >>So naturally when HE gets involved later with Miria, he
      accepts the responsibilities.<<

HIKARU: But I really didn't do anything at all.

HAYAO: You didn't do anything to her in the three days you were
        alone with her?

HIKARU: Nothing.

ROY: And you still call yourself a man?

ALL EXCEPT HIKARU: Stupid!

HIKARU: (Confused again) Huh?

      In a cafe elsewhere in MACROSS CITY, some members of the
      female bridge crew look over a gossip magazine--PEOPLE again?
      and talk about HIKARU and MINMAY.

KIM: (Reading from the magazine) "What was she doing with Valkyrie
      pilot Ichijo?" "Has she decided to outgrow her `innocent
      girl' image?"

VANESSA: (Grabs magazine from Kim) Let me see..."Her mate was a
        pilot...a filthy relation?"

KIM: Just as I told you.

VANESSA: You're right. No one's innocent anymore these days.

KIM: The entertainment industry deserves corruption. I wonder what
        number he was?

SAMMI: How despicable, changing lovers like that.

VANESSA: Actually, you're jealous, aren't you?

SAMMI: (Nodding naively) Yes!

KIM: (Teasing Sammi) But the truth is she doesn't understand
        anything.

VANESSA: (Joins in teasing Sammi) That's right.

               *               *              *

      In her home, MINMAY watches a talk show about her and HIKARU.

GUEST: Minmay and pilot Ichijo could have gotten out of the area if
        they tried. But they didn't. Here lies the suspicion. Etc.

      Dejected, MINMAY shuts off the TV in disgust and falls back on
      her bed in thought, staring at the holographic sculpture on her
      dresser.

      At the officer's club, HIKARU reports to ROY, after he
      has finished his duties for the day. MISA and CLAUDIA
      are also there.

HIKARU: Lieutenant Commander, I've brought the patrol schedule
        chart for tomorrow.

ROY: Thanks. Why don't you have a drink with us before you go?

HIKARU: (Noticing MISA) No...I...

ROY: Come on, have a seat!

HIKARU: But...

MISA: I think I'll be going now.

ROY: What?

MISA: I don't want to be a bother to you.

ROY: Come on Hikaru. See, your superior's trying to make room for you.

HIKARU: OK.

HIKARU: sits down next to MISA.

      Both of them look uncomfortable.

ROY: What's the matter, Hayase?  What's this sulking face you're
        making? You should try to relax and act more like a woman when
        you are away from your post.

MISA: A person's habits are not always easily changed!

ROY: Ha, ha, ha...you got me there. Hayase, even though you graduated top
        of the class from military school, you're also a woman.  So even
        if what a man does is wrong, it's important you sometimes pretend
        he's right.  (Looking at HIKARU) And you, Hikaru!

HIKARU: Y-yes?

ROY: You're a man, aren't you? If you want a girl, you must be
        prepared to go after it. Don't get carried away laboring not to
        hurt her feelings. If you really love her, you must have the
        aggressiveness to make her your own by force, if necessary.

CLAUDIA: Oh, Roy.  You have already said too much.

ROY: I'll show you how a man and a woman are supposed to act
        together. Open your eyes and watch closely.

      ROY grabs CLAUDIA, pins her down on the couch, and kisses her.

CLAUDIA: Roy!

HIKARU AND MISA: (Looking shocked) Huh?

CLAUDIA: See, the two look dazed.

ROY: Aww...that's all right. ROY begins to kiss CLAUDIA again as a
        waiter approaches the table.

CLAUDIA: Roy!

WAITER: Excuse me, but there is a phone call for Mr. Ichijo.

HIKARU: For me?

WAITER: From one of your family members.

HIKARU: Family?

      HIKARU grabs the phone.

HIKARU: This is Ichijo. What?...Really? I'll be right over.

ROY: What's wrong, Hikaru?

HIKARU: P-Please excuse me, but there is a sudden illness in my family.

      HIKARU runs off.

ROY: (The only one who knows HIKARU does not have a family) Family?

      HIKARU meets MINMAY in a park in MACROSS CITY. She sits on a
      park bench wearing a pony tail and a big pair of glasses,
      trying her best at disguise.

HIKARU: Sorry to keep you waiting.

MINMAY: Oh my. You can recognize me?  I tried so hard to disguise myself.

HIKARU: I'd know you anywhere. I have all of your pictures.

MINMAY: I tried so hard.

HIKARU: Is it OK for you to be doing this?

MINMAY: Are you dissatisfied to be with me?

HIKARU: (Surprised) Huh?  All right then...tonight I'll take you
        out on the town! What do you say to that?

MINMAY: Great!

      After a busy and fun-filled tour of the city >>One of the
      backdrops includes a KMEL-106 bumper sticker. Apparently,
      during one of director Kawamori's stays in the Bay Area, he
      came to like the station<< MINMAY and HIKARU rest on a park
      bench with a big window in front of it, providing a
      spectacular view of space.

MINMAY: I've become sick of my present life.

HIKARU: I suppose, if your dream is to become a star, you must
        endure a little.

      The planet Saturn slides into the view of the window.

MINMAY: Ah.  It's so beautiful. I wish I could go there.

      HIKARU decides that he is going to treat MINMAY to a flight
      outside in a VT-1 two-seater trainer type SUPER VALKYRIE.
      MINMAY is a little scared by HIKARU'S flying...and the fact
      that they are using the VALKYRIE without permission.

MINMAY: (Relieved to be alive after one of HIKARU'S maneuvers)
        Whew! But are you sure we can just leave without any
        authorization?

HIKARU: (Waving the question aside) I'm going to take you to see an
        incredible thing!

MINMAY: What?

HIKARU: Ready to go?

      HIKARU has the VT-1 blast away into the rings of Saturn.

MINMAY: Aah!

      HIKARU flies through some of the rings, kicking up the dust with
      his VALKYRIE. He flies through one of the rings, scattering the
      ice particle in it. Then, he turns the VT-1 around so that they
      can view the rainbow.

HIKARU: You can open your eyes now.

MINMAY: (Noticing the rainbow) Wow! (Hugging Hikaru from behind his
        seat in the VT-1) This is the greatest!

HIKARU: This is the rainbow of Saturn.

      Aboard his battle cruiser, BRITAI receives a
      mysterious order from his superior, BODOLZA.

BODOLZA: BRITAI 7018.

BRITAI: Yes!

BODOLZA: Your report has been analyzed. Capture an enemy microne
        human as a specimen.

BRITAI: Understood! (To EXEDOR) What is he going to do with a specimen?

EXEDOR: The Supreme Commander must have a plan.

      One of the soldiers on the bridge notifies BRITAI.

SOLDIER: Reconnaissance reports the appearance of one Meltran
        vessel across the primary warning line.

BRITAI: What?

SOLDIER: What shall we do now?

BRITAI: Reinforce our defense.  Do not let Meltran near us.

EXEDOR: If we do not act quickly, it is possible Meltran will
        succeed before us.

BRITAI: Understood. Commence execution of the microne capture
        operation immediately.

      MINMAY sings, as she and HIKARU fly among the ice in the
      rings of Saturn.

      A message on the VALKYRIE'S intercom interrupts MINMAY.
      LIEUTENANT MISA HAYASE and MINMAY'S brother, LYNN KAIFUN have
      come for MINMAY in a shuttle craft from the MACROSS (MINMAY
      has a homing device on her).

MINMAY: Huh? MINMAY tries to hind from the intercom camera behind
        her helmet.

MISA: (On the intercom) No use hiding, Miss Minmay.

MINMAY: I'm sorry...

MISA: I'm amazed!  Using a Valkyrie for a personal reason?

MINMAY: It isn't Hikaru's fault.  I asked him to take me!

KAIFUN: Minmay!  Come back IMMEDIATELY!

MINMAY: (Startled) Big brother!

KAIFUN: (To HIKARU over the radio) Ensign Ichijo!  If the media
        ever find out about this, it would be the end of her career!
        I've already taken care of those in the upper ranks, but I won't
        have mercy on you.

HIKARU: I understand. I was already prepared to take my punishment.

KAIFUN: What a pilot.  Now hurry and get back to the ship!

HIKARU: (To MINMAY) Let's go home.

MINMAY: (Like a stray kitten picked up by its mother) Yes...

   The group of ZENTRADI BATTLE PODS that BRITAI has sent to
   capture the MICRONES arrives on the scene. Their orders are to
   capture, but not harm, the specimens.

HIKARU: (Surprised) Dammit!

KAIFUN: (Furiously shouts at MISA, as though this ZENTRADI attack
   is all her fault) An enemy attack! DO SOMETHING!

MISA: I know! (Talking into the radio to the MACROSS) This is
        Lieutenant Hayase.  Relay this to Lieutenant Commander Fokker's
        quarters...THIS IS AN EMERGENCY!

      HIKARU manages to outmaneuver the ZENTRADI PODS, getting the
      VALKYRIE into a firing position.

HIKARU: Don't worry.  I'll take care of them. He presses the fire
        button on his control stick...but nothing happens.

MINMAY: Hikaru...?  He tries to fire again.

HIKARU: Oh no, I forgot this is a training plane!

      HIKARU turns the VT-1 around to try his best to outrun the
      ZENTRADI BATTLE PODS and get back to the MACROSS.

MISA: That's strange...I wonder why they don't fire?

      A ZENTRADI POD manages to catch up to the VALKYRIE.  It looks
      very big up close.

 MINMAY: (Screaming) Go away!

HIKARU: Dammit, stop teasing us!

      ROY arrives on the scene in his VF-1S SUPER VALKYRIE.
      He appears a little drunk (they probably called him
      out when he was about to hit his bunk). He pulls up
      behind HIKARU and the pursuing ZENTRADI.

ROY: (Over the radio) Hey, Hikaru!  Making trouble again, eh?

HIKARU: Roy!

ROY: But you did the right thing...(belch)...you need that
        aggressiveness to use force if you want to make that girl your
        own, you know.

HIKARU: Roy! You're drunk!

ROY: Stupid! Who can go to war if he is afraid of alcohol?

      ROY is alerted by his heads-up weapons display that some of
      the ZENTRADI SOLDIERS are in firing range.  He performs a
      rolling maneuver and destroys three of the pursuing soldiers.
      But some of the ZENTRADI manage to capture HIKARU'S VALKYRIE
      and MISA'S shuttle craft. ROY is too involved in shooting
      down ZENTRADI PODS and does not notice until it's too late.

HIKARU (Startled by the soldiers catching his VALKYRIE) Wha...!

MINMAY: (Screaming) Go away!

HIKARU: Damn!

      ROY doesn't notice yet.

ROY: (Shooting down pod) Yeah! Did you see that, Hikaru?

      At last he notices they're caught, but the ZENTRADI have
      already taken them inside their ship...this isn't good.  The
      ZENTRADI SOLDIERS make it back to BRITAI'S SHIP with the
      captured "MICRONE specimen." ROY, his VALKYRIE changing
      into BATTLOID mode, follows them into the entrance of the
      ship. An armed group of ZENTRADI soldiers greet him, forcing
      him to surrender. The prisoners are gathered together in a
      large cell, which is really nothing but a huge MICRONE
      container. BRITAI and EXEDOR walk up to the container to
      interrogate the MICRONE prisoners. BRITAI'S face fills the
      view above the prisoners, revealing just how big the ZENTRADI
      are. They are all startled by the sight.

MINMAY: Eek!

KAIFUN: (Awed) Who are they?

EXEDOR: Enemy's language is already interpretable. Answer Zentran's questions.

BRITAI: How can micrones of Man and Woman coexist?

HIKARU: Micrones of man and woman?

ROY: What?

MISA: I wonder what they're after?

BRITAI: We have already found that Man and Woman can coexist on the same ship.

HIKARU: What's the use in finding that out?

MISA: It seems their culture is different from ours.

BRITAI: Why does not Enemy fight?  Why did Enemy become micrones?

MISA: Unlike you giants, we are born this way.

EXEDOR: "Boorn?" Does "boorn" mean "created?"

MISA: Created?

EXEDOR: Yes, is that not correct?

ROY: Well, essentially you're right.  Man and woman cooperate to "create."

EXEDOR: Man and Woman cooperate?  Unthinkable!

BRITAI: Why do not fight?

ROY: Are you kidding?  It's far better to hug a woman than fight her.

BRITAI: "Huug?"  Show what is "huug."

ROY: THIS is a hug...

      ROY grabs MINMAY, but KAIFUN objects.

KAIFUN: Hey! What do you think you are doing?

BRITAI: Do Man and Woman of your kind always perform such unthinkable?

ROY: (Kidding BRITAI) Yes...with kisses and everything else included.

BRITAI: "Keese?"  Show what is "keese."

      ROY is stumped this time.

ROY: That is...

      BRITAI'S patience wears thin. He smashes the container as he
      reaches in and grabs MINMAY in his fist.

MINMAY: (Screaming) AHH!

BRITAI: Show what is "keese!"

KAIFUN: (Stepping forward) I'll kiss her!  Let her go!

BRITAI: (Setting MINMAY back down) Very well...

KAIFUN: (Whispering to MINMAY) Quick, act it out, or they will kill us.

      He begins to kiss her.

MINMAY: What? Ahh...

      This display shocks the two ZENTRADI.

BRITAI AND EXEDOR: Oh!  Keese!  Oh!

                *              *              *

      The prisoners are taken away in two separate containers, a
      ZENTRADI guard carrying each one.  MINMAY and her brother
      KAIFUN are in one container.  ROY, HIKARU, and MISA are in
      the other. Each of the groups is taken away in different
      directions.  HIKARU sees MINMAY taken somewhere else, away
      from him.

HIKARU: (Depressed, looking out of the window of the container) Minmay...

MINMAY: (Looking at HIKARU from the window of her container) Hikaru...

HIKARU: Minmay...

ROY: Imagine that...they freaked out when they saw just a kiss.

MISA: It would appear that their men fight against their women.

     All of a sudden, gunfire is heard. The ZENTRADI guard carrying
     HIKARU'S container is shot dead. Shots also shatter the
     container.  HIKARU, ROY, and MISA make a break for it. A troop
     from the all-female MELTRANDI is making a surprise attack on
     BRITAI'S battle cruiser. The fierce warrior MIRIA 639 leads this
     small group of women.

ROY: Is everyone all right?

MISA: Yes.

HIKARU: Barely!

      Meanwhile, on the bridge of the ship . . .

INTERCOM MESSAGE: Intrusion by Meltran! Three of the micrones have
   escaped in the confusion!

BRITAI: Put the ship on full alert!  Annihilate the enemy and capture the
        micrones. (Bitterly)...that we let this Meltran intrusion happen...

EXEDOR: We still have two micrones in detention.  We must take them
        to the Supreme Commander.

      In their escape, ROY, HIKARU, and MISA stumble across the
      area where their fighter crafts are stored.

ROY: We found them!

      ROY'S VALKYRIE is still in BATTLOID mode.  He climbs to the
      head to enter the cockpit. Just as they are getting into
      their fighters, some ZENTRADI soldiers discover them. But ROY
      makes quick use of his brain.

MISA: AAH!

ROY: Hikaru!  Do a kiss!

HIKARU: What?  Oh yeah, that's right...!

      HIKARU turns and grabs MISA.

HIKARU: Excuse me!

      HIKARU kisses MISA.

MISA: (surprised) What?

      The soldiers are stunned. They can only stare, as HIKARU and MISA kiss.

ZENTRADI SOLDIER: Unthinkable!

      HIKARU finishes kissing MISA.  She slaps him.

HIKARU: (Holding a hand to his cheek) That hurt!

MISA: (Holding her hand that she hit HIKARU with) Hurry!

HIKARU: You don't have to tell me...

      HIKARU closes the fighter canopy and begins to take off.

HIKARU: I must rescue Minmay.

      The MELTRANDI women burst in upon the scene, blowing away any
      ZENTRADI soldier in sight. ROY and HIKARU park their
      VALKYRIES under cover and watch the battle.

MIRIA: (Blowing away another ZENTRADI soldier) Too weak...

ZENTRADI SOLDIER: Arrgh!

      The body of the soldier falls at her feet. More ZENTRADI
      arrive on the scene to fire at MIRIA. She picks up the body
      of the dead soldier at her feet, using it as a shield. Then,
      she throws the body at the other ZENTRADI soldiers. The dead
      soldier's BATTLE SUIT explodes, killing some more ZENTRADI.
      Next, she cuts down the remaining ZENTRADI with the machine
      guns in her BATTLE SUIT.  Blood and body parts start falling
      all over the ground. With the foot of her ARMORED BATTLE
      SUIT, she crushes the head of one of the SOLDIERS.

MIRIA:  Disappointing.  None can match my fighting?

      Satisfied with the damage she has caused, MIRIA instructs her
      troops to leave. She flies to the ceiling of the hangar bay
      and fires several missiles to blow a hole to the outside.
      Then, she escapes into space.  As the other MELTRANDI
      soldiers follow her, an unseen ZENTRADI soldier shoots one of
      them down.  The female soldier and her BATTLE SUIT crash to
      the floor. She struggles out of her BATTLE SUIT, crawling out
      onto the floor. Mortally wounded, she quickly dies, giving
      HIKARU, MISA, and ROY their first glimpse of a MELTRANDI, the
      giant female warrior counterpart to the ZENTRADI.

HIKARU: It's a woman!

MISA: Men and women ARE fighting!

HIKARU: What's going on?

      ROY steps out of his hiding place, seeing a chance to
      escape in all of the confusion caused by the MELTRANDI.

ROY: Hikaru! Now! This is the chance to escape!

HIKARU: Yes, sir!

      All of a sudden, a ZENTRADI soldier drops from his hiding
      place in the ceiling.  He clobbers ROY'S VALKYRIE. The VF-1S
      stumbles to the floor.  This is the ruthless KAMUJIN 03350,
      a ZENTRADI OFFICER.

KAMUJIN: Will not escape, microne!

      HIKARU, his VALKYRIE in GERWALK mode, rushes at KAMUJIN. The
      fist on his VALKYRIE'S arms are balled in anger.

HIKARU: Stop it! Aah!

      (Charging at KAMUJIN) KAMUJIN turns to shoot at HIKARU:, but
      ROY blasts at KAMUJIN, making him fall to the floor in his
      BATTLE SUIT.  KAMUJIN gets out to leap on top of ROY, just as
      his BATTLE SUIT explodes. He rips the canopy of ROY'S
      VALKYRIE off, glaring at ROY, exposed and injured.

HIKARU: ROY!

ROY: Get out of here! Go rescue Minmay!  Hurry...

      ROY then faces KAMUJIN.

ROY: Shit, you!

      With KAMUJIN standing over his VALKYRIE, ROY manages to have
      the manipulator arm of his battloid lift its GUN POD and
      blast KAMUJIN in the chest. The wounded KAMUJIN spits blood
      inside his helmet on the faceplate.  He falls dead on top of
      ROY'S BATTLOID.  ROY himself is fatally wounded. His battloid
      begins to overheat.

ROY: Hikaru...tell Claudia...

HIKARU: Roy!

      ROY'S VALKYRIE explodes in a great ball of orange flame.

HIKARU: WHY?

MISA: Don't waste this opportunity his death gave us.

HIKARU: What! You cold...(notices Misa is about to break down weeping)

MISA: Minmay has a homing device. Follow its signal.

HIKARU: (Understanding) Roger...

      Meanwhile, on the bridge of this battle cruiser...

NAVIGATOR: Energy level rising.  Flagship coordinates estimation completed.

BRITAI: Long-range fold, stand by.

      HIKARU, following MINMAY'S homing device, has located where
      she and KAIFUN are held. He uses the manipulator arms of the
      VALKYRIE to rip the wall apart and sticks the nose of his
      GERWALK through the wall.

HIKARU: MINMAY!

MINMAY: Hikaru! (Turning to her brother KAIFUN) It's Hikaru! He's
   come for us! (Noticing something strange) Ahh?

      As HIKARU starts to come through the wall, the room begins to
      blur out of focus. There is a strange humming noise.

MISA: A fold! This ship is trying to fold!

      The big ship begins its hyperspace fold. A MELTRANDI outside
      shoots one last missile at the ship, creating a hole in the
      outer wall.  The vacuum sucks HIKARU'S VALKYRIE into space.
      HIKARU dives back at the ship, hoping to get back in before
      it disappears.

HIKARU: MINMAY!

MINMAY: Hikaru...

      HIKARU'S VALKYRIE is caught in the battle cruiser's hyperspatial field.

HIKARU AND MISA: Aahh...The

      GERWALK disappears into a hyperspatial storm.

MINMAY: (Crying) Hikaru...Hikaru...

      BRITAI'S battle cruiser fades into hyperspace.

               *              *              *

      The scene opens with a view of a harsh, desert-like world--
      dry, burnt-out with raging lighting storms, sand, and
      little else. All of a sudden, there is a crackle and a flash
      of energy. HIKARU'S VALKYRIE bursts into the scene. MISA is
      unconscious as HIKARU lands the GERWALK, lost in his own
      thoughts.  He sees the reading of MINMAY'S homing device
      disappear from his radar display.

HIKARU: Minmay...

MISA: (Waking up) Mmm...uhn...where are we?

HIKARU: How could I know?

MISA: And the enemy vessel?

HIKARU: No sign of it.

MISA: I see.  In any case, what a creepy planet.

      MISA looks out of the VALKYRIE'S canopy, studying the horizon.

MISA: Look! That looks like an ocean! Can you fly us out that way?

HIKARU: Why would I want to go out there for?

MISA: What?

HIKARU: Going there won't reunite me with Minmay.

MISA: What are you saying?

HIKARU: Minmay will probably be killed...like Roy was.
        If I hadn't taken her out, this never would have happened.

MISA: But it's our duty to investigate where this place is.

HIKARU: (Turning around in his seat, yelling at her) Duty! Duty! Is
        that all you ever think about?

MISA: I understand...I won't ask you anymore.

HIKARU: (Taken by surprise) Wait, Lieutenant...

      MISA activates the controls of the VALKYRIE in her seat. She
      attempts to take off. The VT-1 blasts off the sand
      uncontrollably.

MISA: (Screaming) AHH!

HIKARU: AHH!

      HIKARU regains control of the VALKYRIE. He crash lands it on
      the beach at the ocean MISA has spotted earlier.  There
      appears to be a large shipwreck near by.

MISA (Regretfully) Whew!

HIKARU: (Yelling at MISA) THAT was dumb!

      MISA looks outside and spots the wreck.

MISA: (Surprised) Ahh?

HIKARU: Huh--ah? This is the...

MISA: (Shocked but holding it back) United Navy Pacific Fleet
        Offensive Aircraft Carrier...PROMETHEUS!

HIKARU: How could it be...

MISA: (Nothing more to inhibit her) This is Earth!

      BRITAI and EXEDOR take MINMAY and KAIFUN to their leader, the
      MOBILE FORTRESS GORG BODOLZA, who is himself the huge
      ZENTRADI flagship.  Inside the round container sit MINMAY,
      dejected, and KAIFUN.  MINMAY sings a sad song to pass the
      time.  While she sings, we see scenes of MISA and HIKARU
      exploring the PROMETHEUS, searching for food and survivors.
      The dead bodies and rotten canned food they find leave them,
      especially MISA, depressed.

      BRITAI, EXEDOR, and some other ZENTRADI commanders have been
      listening to MINMAY'S song in awe with BORG BODOLZA.

BODOLZA: Protoculture.

BODOLZA: Microne with "Culture" is, therefore, Protoculture.

EXEDOR: "Culture"?

BODOLZA: Even I do not know much besides that it means "creative
        activity that is not fighting." Our Creators did not teach me
        anything about "Culture," except for our programming, "Never
        become involved with Culture."

EXEDOR: That unthinkable sound is "Culture?"

BODOLZA: That is "Song."

ALL EXCEPT BODOLZA: "Song?"

BODOLZA: I am a Mobile Fortress that has endured 120,000 cycles since my
        Creation.  In my countless battles, I have come to comprehend a
        little of the "Culture" of Protoculture.  This "song" appears to
        have the power to bring men and women together.

BRITAI: What power?

ZENTRADI COMMANDER: Power that deprives us of our will to fight?

      From his great height, BODOLZA extends one of his tentacles
      down to the commanders.  In it is something that looks like
      a card.

BRITAI: What's this?

BODOLZA: A "Fragment of Culture" that was captured a long time ago.

EXEDOR: "Fragment of Culture?"

BODOLZA: The two Protocultures may know what this is.

      HIKARU stares at the setting sun over what used to be Tokyo,
      after a long day of searching for survivors with MISA.  He
      talks to her in sarcasm.


HIKARU: Tokyo, too, was destroyed. The United Forces Headquarters
        at Alaska Base was buried in lava.  We couldn't find one single
        living person in a whole week. So, where to now?  London?
        Paris?  Or how about New York? Well, Lieutenant? Give me your
        orders.  Where to?

MISA: (Sobbing) Stop it! Please stop...

               *              *              *

      HIKARU and MISA take shelter from a storm in a tent
      underneath their VALKYRIE.  MISA is ill, loosing her will to
      live.  HIKARU tries to feed her some horrible looking fish he
      has prepared.

HIKARU: (Holding the fish on a stick to show MISA) There now, it's
        cooked. You have not eaten a thing in three days.  At least eat
        a little...

MISA: I would rather die before I eat that.

HIKARU: I put the anti-radiation drug in the recipe. So, a little bite of
        this won't hurt. Survival is also a soldier's duty, isn't it?

MISA: It doesn't matter anymore.

HIKARU: But we finally made it back to Earth.  And if the Macross is safe,
        it will be here soon enough. Here...(offers her the "fish").

MISA: Don't you understand?

HIKARU: What?

MISA: The MACROSS won't be able to do anything even if it does get here.

HIKARU: Why?

MISA: There is no one left on Earth!

HIKARU: The people on the MACROSS are still alive.

MISA: The Zentradi could kill the 10 billion people on Earth in
        just a matter of seconds.  (Cough, cough, cough.) See...(cough,
        cough, cough)...how miserable it is to be the officer of an army
        whose defeat is obvious.

      HIKARU sits at MISA'S side and places a folded wet
      handkerchief on her forehead.

MISA: But you're much tougher than I. Lieutenant Commander Fokker told me...

HIKARU: Roy?

MISA: That you don't have a family. You mother died when you were
        very young, and your father died in an accident.

HIKARU: (Masking grief) He made a mistake during an acrobatic
        maneuver. "Zoom - splat." Like that.

MISA: So then you have lived by yourself until now?

HIKARU: I've been just an air race prize hunter.  I have flown
        planes since I was small.

MISA: But that's why you're holding up, but not I.  I thought I was
        a soldier, who would struggle for survival even if I were the
        last one left.  But this is the sorry state I'm in now.

      HIKARU sits facing the fire in thought. As MISA sits up, the
      handkerchief falls off her forehead, landing in her lap.  She
      notices LYNN MINMAY'S autograph on it.

MISA: I'm sorry...I was arro-...

      Surprised, she begins to speak to HIKARU, but she stops
      herself short as she thinks of how losing MINMAY must have
      tortured him.  She picks up the cooked fish and tries a piece
      ...realizing she is not the only one suffering.

               *              *              *

HIKARU and MISA: fly out over the ocean, once again searching for
any signs of life. MISA spots a strange tower sticking out of the
water near the horizon.

MISA: (Pointing) What's that column over there?

HIKARU: Let's check it out.

      HIKARU parks the VALKYRIE on the water near the entrance of
      this large tower-like structure that sticks out of the water.
      It is covered by seaweed and algae. They enter the tower.

MISA: It appears to have sunk a long time ago.

HIKARU: (Lost in thought) Hmm . . . no one seems to be around.

      The rooms are filled with computer screens and terminals that
      look more like some biological machinery.

MISA: But some of the devices seem to be working.

HIKARU: They're made for our size.

MISA: If these don't belong to the giants, then who...?

     They walk up to one of the banks of buttons and monitors.

MISA: Could this be a fold communications system...?

HIKARU: (Looking over Misa's shoulder) A fold communication system?

MISA: Maybe we can contact the MACROSS with it. It seems to be in
           working condition.

HIKARU: But it'll be bad if the others intercept our call.

MISA: I know, but we must give it a try. (She begins to try to
        controls.) If the MACROSS has not been destroyed, they will
        answer. (She stands back.) No response...(breaks into a sob).

HIKARU: It's probably damaged.  Maybe we pushed the wrong buttons.
        Let's try the other ones.

MISA AND HIKARU: (Surprised) Ahh!

      HIKARU has activated a large holographic display.  In an
      ancient, more complex dialect of the ZENTRADI'S language, the
      display computer presents the history of the building of
      SPACE-CITY ALTILLA to MISA and HIKARU.  The computer thinks
      they might be the original inhabitants returning to Earth.
      MISA, who has had training in the ZENTRADI'S language,
      understands what the computer says.

MISA: "We have been waiting?" For us?

HIKARU: You can understand...?

MISA: Yes...a little. (To the computer) Who are you?  The computer
        of a colonization vessel?  (Listening) No, we are people of
        this planet. The computer speaks.

MISA: Genetic manipulation?

     The power to the computer fades, and the display goes dead.

HIKARU: It disappeared.

MISA: NO! Wait! I still have some more questions!

HIKARU: What did it say?

MISA: It's diverting all that's left of its power to raise the city.

HIKARU: Raise the city?

MISA: Yes.

      They step out of the tower and watch, as a huge city rises
      out of the sea. MISA explains to HIKARU the history, that she
      has learned from the computer, of the island, as they watch.

MISA: A long time ago, there was an interstellar civilization
        called Protoculture.  They were advanced in genetic engineering.
        Eventually, the men and women were able to reproduce themselves
        on their own.  Their men separated to become the Zentradi, and
        the women, the Meltrandi. The two started wars against each
        other.

HIKARU: That was the time when they created the giants, who only
        knew to fight?

MISA: But when the giants' fighting became too intense, those who
        realized, at last, the mistake sought to start over, with men
        and women in coexistence, and they found refuge on Earth.

      The city has finished rising.  It glistens wet in the sun.

MISA: After they arrived on Earth, they manipulated the genes of
        the indigenous creatures to create our ancestors.

HIKARU: Even our ancestors were their cre-...?

MISA: Yes.

HIKARU: Is that so? Where did the people of this city go?

MISA: Twenty thousand years ago, the giants' fighting reached
        this solar system.  They sunk this city to hide it and
        temporarily left Earth.

HIKARU: But they were unable to return?  So, the computer mistook
        the Zentradi attack of a half year ago as their return and
        raised the city?

MISA: And so that we could live here in this city.

HIKARU: But after it waited for 20,000 years, we were the only ones
        to return.

MISA: Truly...

               *              *              *

      The couple explores the city, and they come across an ancient
      PROTOCULTURE residence.  They enter the kitchen of the
      dwelling.  It actually looks modern, except for all the algae
      inside. It reveals how advanced the PROTOCULTURE'S society
      was, so long ago.

HIKARU: Everything seems to be in ruins.

MISA: Yes...

MISA: spots something near the sink in the kitchen.

MISA: Hmm...I wonder what this could be?

HIKARU: Did you find something?

      MISA picks up a small card-like object. It is similar to the
      one that BODOLZA has shown to his commanders.

MISA: There appears to be some kind of writing on it.  (She tries
        to read it.) "Remember...you remember...do you remember?" I
        can't understand it that well.  The language is more complex
        than the giants'.

HIKARU: I see. This looks like it's just an ordinary house. Let's
        go look somewhere else.

MISA: Can we stay a little longer? I really have no reason, but
   I    just have this vague feeling of...

HIKARU: (Nothing better for her to do, eh?) I see.  Well, I'll just
        go have a look around.  I'll be back soon.

      HIKARU leaves. MISA is left alone in the  abandoned
      PROTOCULTURE home.  She explores the kitchen and its
      contents...jugs and plates in the sink.

MISA: (Looking in the kitchen sink) Some things never change.
        (Pouring water out of a simply but well designed jug, watching
        it pour) Ah.

               *              *              *

      HIKARU returns to the dwelling after a long
      search through the city.

HIKARU: No one is here, as expected, and all the machines are useless.

MISA: Welcome home, dear!

      HIKARU finds MISA waiting for him with eating utensils,
      plates, and glasses. She has set a rather nice table for the
      two of them and greets him as if the two were a newly wed
      couple.

HIKARU: I'm home, dear.

MISA: Shall we eat?

HIKARU: (Dramatic pause) Yes!

      They play "house," pretending to have an elegant dinner.
      HIKARU accidentally knocks one of the glasses off the table
      onto the wet floor. MISA looks at it.  Suddenly she is
      depressed. She folds her hands and lowers her head.

MISA: (Sobbing)  I want to go home...where everyone is...

      HIKARU reaches for MISA'S hand to hold it.

MISA: Ensign Ichijo...

      They kiss and watch the sunset over the island together from
      a hole in the wall of the kitchen.

               *              *              *

      Early next morning, MISA comes out of the apartment, zipping
      up her uniform and straightening her hair. >>Gee, I wonder
      what went on between the two the night before?<<  She stands
      next to HIKARU.

MISA: It is starting to move again?

HIKARU: (Looking up) No, this sound is from the sky.

MISA: The sky?

HIKARU: (surprised) Ahh!

      They spot the MACROSS coming over the edge of the horizon,
      nearing the island.

MISA: Ahh!

      They hug, kiss, and watch the MACROSS come towards the
      island.

HIKARU AND MISA: MACROSS!

MISA: Our transmission did reach them!

               *              *              *

      Back on the MACROSS, HIKARU and MISA report to CAPTAIN
      GLOVAL'S office.

MISA: Hayase, Misa, and Ichijo, Hikaru reporting for duty, sir!

GLOVAL: I am glad you have come back. How is Earth?

MISA: Well, during the period of a month, we searched 15,000 square
        kilometers of land and this alien city, but found no survivors.

GLOVAL: I see.  I'll have the full report. For now, I suggest that
        the two of you get some well deserved rest.

MISA AND HIKARU: Yes, sir.

      They turn and face CLAUDIA, not knowing what to say about
      ROY'S death.

CLAUDIA: (Sad but holding it back) Did Roy...did he end his life
        for a worthy cause?

HIKARU: Yes.

CLAUDIA: Thank you...that's all I wanted to know.

      CAPTAIN GLOVAL breathes a deep sigh and turns to stare out
      his window to look at the sea. Storm clouds are on the
      horizon.  He lights his pipe.

                    *              *              *

      Elevator doors open. MISA and HIKARU step out into the bright
      light and sounds of MACROSS CITY. The sight of people going
      about their daily business and the sight of children playing
      make them realize how much they missed the MACROSS.  Looking
      up, HIKARU is reminded of another thing he has missed. On a
      giant video screen, a MINMAY music video is playing over the
      city.  Her song fills the air.

      SONG LYRICS:
          In a glowing red cafe terrace,
          With the fragrance of Turkish coffee,
          The Tango rhythm, sounding depressed, dances alone.
          Wind blows in my heart...

HIKARU: (Staring at the video) Minmay...

      SONG LYRICS:
          If you're not coming,
          I wonder who I'll want to dance with...

MISA: It's strange, isn't it?  Minmay is somewhere so far away, and
        yet we can still hear...

HIKARU: Her songs...

MISA: As though she were still alive.

HIKARU: I somehow miss those days. It's only been a month since the
        time I took her out into space, but it seems as if it was such
        a long time ago.

      SONG LYRICS:
          Silver moon, red moon.
          You are so cold, a Shanghai dandy.
          My eyes smart with Jitan smoke...

MISA: I see.

      As the song ends, we see a view of Earth from a low orbit in
      space.

      SONG LYRICS:
          The night makes the Gypsy violin cry.
          A wine bottle and two glasses.
          But my burning passion has nowhere to go.
          Tonight I toast myself, in my loneliness.

      Into this tranquil view of space,  the blue static storm of
      a hyperspace fold crackles. It is a MELTRANDI battle cruiser.
      On board, MIRIA 639 receives her orders from LAPRAMIZ, the
      MELTRANDI'S SUPREME COMMANDER.

LAPRAMIZ: The "Fragment of Culture" must be in the Protoculture ruin. For
        our victory, seize control of this ruin.

MIRIA: (Saluting) Understood. I swear for the pride of Woman, I
        shall not fail.

               *              *              *

      The MACROSS has detected the incoming group of aliens.
      HIKARU, MAX, and HAYAO have been sent out in their VALKYRIES
      to intercept the enemy. With ROY gone, MAX now rides the the
      VF-1S.  MISA, from the bridge, radios the latest report on
      the enemy to the fighters.

MISA: (On the radio) We have detected an enemy fighter squad coming
        in from the ocean on a heading of 27 degrees. They are presumed
        to be the all-female Meltrandi.

HAYAO: Only women? This is good.

HIKARU: They may be women, but don't underestimate them! They might
        even be tougher than the Zentradi!

MAX: That's interesting.

HIKARU: Interesting?

MAX (Teasing HIKARU) What's the matter, Lieutenant Junior Grade
        Ichijo? Suddenly, you're a chicken now.

HIKARU: What?

HAYAO: (Teasing) Leader Max is right. Maybe it's because he has a
        woman now...AAAKKKUH!

HIKARU: KAKIZAKI!

      In his monitor, HIKARU can see HAYAO'S head exploding.
      Hayao's VF-1A VALKYRIE is destroyed by an incoming MELTRANDI
      missile. They have failed to notice this long-range attack
      while they have been fooling around. HAYAO'S plane falls into
      the ocean, as HIKARU ICHIJO and MAX GENUS split off to go on
      the defensive.

MIRIA: What's the big deal about Protoculture?

      MAX and HIKARU split up.  The MELTRANDI break off to follow
      them. The other MELTRANDI WOMEN go after HIKARU, as MIRIA
      goes after MAX.  MAX and MIRIA dogfight. Missiles fire,
      particle beams blast, and machine guns strafe. Each of them
      score hits on the other.  One thing is becoming apparent;
      both of them have met their match in fighting skills.

MAX: Missed!

MIRIA: Unthinkable!  Enemy!     Unthinkable!

      With the hope that she might be able to turn the tide of
      the combat, Miria leaves the sky over the PROTOCULTURE
      island ALTILLA, and heads back to her space cruiser,
      with MAX in hot pursuit.

MAX: I won't let you escape!  (Noticing MIRIA'S cruiser) A battleship!

      MIRIA ducks into an entrance into the ship.  MAX follows, gun
      ready, his VALKYRIE in BATTLE mode. He enters a long, thin,
      closed-off corridor.  There is no sign of MIRIA.  From behind
      at the outside entrance, a gun blasts. MAX maneuvers his
      BATTLE SUIT in a spinning roll across the floor to avoid the
      gunfire.  MIRIA has positioned herself near the ceiling at
      the entrance, springing her trap on MAX. They duel in the
      closed corridor, guns blazing and battle suits dodging. They
      are equally matched.  Soon, their gunfire shoots out the
      lights. Only their shots light the corridor, as they enjoy
      this deadly dance.

               *              *              *

      MIRIA'S CRUISER fires at the MACROSS, destroying its main
      guns. The MACROSS topples onto ALTILLA.  HIKARU becomes
      desperate as he sees the MACROSS losing.  Then, over his
      radio comes the voice of MINMAY humming a tune.

HIKARU: (Regarding the battle) Dammit, at this rate...(hears song,
        startled)...Minmay!

      On the bridge of the MACROSS, the crew also hears MINMAY'S tune.

SAMMI: What is this. . .?

KIM: Where does this song come from?

MISA: Minmay!

               *              *              *

      MINMAY'S humming can be heard on board the MELTRANDI battle
      cruiser as well. In the corridor, MAX has finally won over
      MIRIA.  He gets out of his VALKYRIE to take a look at his
      opponent.  She is still alive. Her helmet comes off.

MAX: Beautiful.

MIRIA: (Dazed, staring at MAX) Beau-ti-ful?

               *              *              *

      On the bridge of the Meltrandi cruiser filling the air,
      Minmay's song stuns the crew.

MELTRANDI FIRST OFFICER: Miria's the captain, and she's the first
        officer.  Soldiers' fighting efficiency dropping!  (Startled by
        Minmay's song) What is this sound? Is this the "Power of
        Culture?"

      All of a sudden, sensors come alert.  The battle cruiser
      swings around to detect a great new threat.  Over the
      horizon, millions of Zentradi battle cruisers appear, including
      Bodolza's great flagship. Perversely outnumbered, the Meltrandi
      battle cruiser beats a hasty retreat into hyperspace. EXEDOR,
      BRITAI, and BODOLZA watch the ship leave. They have been
      experimenting on using the captured Minmay's voice as a weapon
      to confuse the Meltrandi.

EXEDOR: It is a success.  Meltran has retreated.

BODOLZA: If we can add to this "Song" what Minmay calls the
        "Leerics", then we will be able to make Meltran surrender.

   The MACROSS receives a transmission from the ZENTRADI.

MISA: Captain, the Zentradi are proposing a peace negotiation.

GLOVAL: A peace negotiation?

               *              *              *

      All over Macross City, TVs, radios, and public speakers
      broadcast Gloval's announcement.

ANNOUNCER: Captain Gloval will now make his official announcement.

      In a large conference room on board the MACROSS, CAPTAIN
      GLOVAL appears in his formal dress uniform, to address the
      press and refugees on the MACROSS about their present
      situation.

GLOVAL: Effective September 11, 11 AM, U.N. SPACY SDF-1 MACROSS
        will have established peace with the Zentradi 425th Bodol Fleet.


REPORTERS: (Shocked) What? What did he say?  Oh, my God!

GLOVAL: And now, as a result of investigating this alien
        space-city, we have found that...

      People all over MACROSS listen to the announcement, stopping
      all activity in the city.

GLOVAL: The aliens who built it were the descendants of a highly
        advanced interstellar civilization, called Protoculture, that
        prospered 500,000 years ago and that originally, we humans, the
        Zentradi, and their enemy the Meltrandi all had the same genetic
        structure as the Protoculture's.

      The thought hushes the people watching, all eyes intently
      watching GLOVAL as he continues his presentation of their
      findings of the shared origin of the human, ZENTRADI, and
      MELTRANDI races.  The PROTOCULTURE civilization has created
      all of them.

GLOVAL: They were created by the Protoculture's advanced science of
        manipulating the human genes.

      A large projection screen comes down behind Gloval. It shows
      a recording of RESTRUCTURING CHAMBERS that the ZENTRADI use
      to reduce the size of their members to MICRONES. It shows
      three ZENTRADI soldiers being reduced to human size.

GLOVAL: Please observe.  By utilizing the Protoculture's genetic
        engineering techniques, it is possible to change Zentradi back
        into humans.

      GLOVAL motions the audience to look to his right, to three bald men.

GLOVAL: These three gentlemen sitting with us now are the Zentradi
        soldiers you have just seen.

      The crowd gasps with astonishment.

GLOVAL: They are a warrior race that knows nothing of culture. They
        are split into two forces, the males and the females, and have
        been fighting each other for over 500,000 years.

      The ZENTRADI soldiers speak to the audience, all of them in
      a heavy ZENTRADI accent.

ZENTRADI SOLDIER #1 (LOLI): (He lifts a cup to his mouth and drinks
        from it) This is the first time that I have ever ingested
        anything of such Culture.

ZENTRADI SOLDIER #2 (WARERA): And to be treated like this by
        Meltran-I mean women-is far more pleasing than to be treated the
        same by men.

ZENTRADI SOLDIER #3 (CONDA): I agree!

      On his battle cruiser, BRITAI eavesdrops on GLOVAL'S announcement.

EXEDOR: I thought we were forbidden to receive the Protoculture's
        broadcasting until the operation succeeds.  What is it?

BRITAI: Can you see those three?

EXEDOR: What about those three micrones we sent to make the
        Earthers stop fighting?

BRITAI: (he has never seen a Zentran so full of Culture.) I wish I
        could become a microne.

EXEDOR: Unthinkable!

BRITAI: It is a joke.

EXEDOR: "Jooke?"

BRITAI: Do you not know?

EXEDOR: No.

BRITAI: Minmay of the Protoculture taught me.  I think it means "I
        am not serious."

EXEDOR: Unthinkable!

      Back in the conference room on the MACROSS...

ANNOUNCER: And now, may I introduce the greatest superstar in the
        Galaxy...MISS LYNN MINMAY!

MINMAY: This melody you hear now comes from an ancient Zentradi
        memory plate we decoded. Unfortunately, their memory plate did
        not have the lyrics recorded.

      HIKARU and MISA sit in a waiting room, in dress uniform.

MINMAY: So, our lyric writers on the Macross are writing wonderful
        lyrics to this melody right now.  And I wish to broadcast this
        song to the universe, so that we can negotiate for peace with
        the Meltrandi and establish a warless, peaceful world.

ANNOUNCER: We can take this first step toward peace because of
        countless sacrifices people have made in the past. All of us
        suffered though unhappy times. All of a sudden, many of our
        young people were forced into this war. Some became prisoners of
        war, others were separated from each other, and many others have
        lost their lives. And now, Lynn Minmay waits and hopes for a
        reunion of joyful tears with some special people.  They
        are...Chief Operator of our United Forces Lieutenant Commander
        Hayase, Misa...and Valkyrie Skull Squadron Leader Lieutenant
        Junior Grade Ichijo, Hikaru.

      They got promoted. MINMAY is surprised at this announcement.
      She looks around, confused. HIKARU and MISA step out onto the
      stage.  MINMAY stares at them with tears swelling in her
      eyes. All of a sudden, she drops the microphone, which
      feedsback as it hits the floor, and runs to eagerly hug
      HIKARU.

MINMAY: (Tears in eyes) Hikaru!

HIKARU: Minmay...

MINMAY: Hikaru...Hikaru...Hikaru...?

      HIKARU looks at MINMAY and then to MISA.  MINMAY follows his
      glance.  There three of the stand there.  MINMAY senses that
      something has change between them. The crowd gasps. The press
      has a field day popping pictures of the love triangle. HIKARU
      apologetically looks at MISA, while MINMAY still holds him.
      We cut to a shot of a couple of lyric writers crammed in a
      studio.

LYRIC WRITER #1: "A girl in love"?

LYRIC WRITER #2: "A season for dreams"?

LYRIC WRITER #1: None are good.

               *              *              *

      Later in her quarters, MISA looks at the artifacts she has
      brought back from ALTILLA. She takes a look at the memory
      card and tries to read it. She begins to realize that these
      could be the lyrics to the PROTOCULTURE song that MINMAY
      presented only the melody at the press conference.

MISA: (Reading from the card, then trying to sing the words as she
        makes a realization) "Do you remember...eye to eye...when our
        eyes met for the first time...?" (Startled by the sudden
        revelation) Could this be...?

      HIKARU is standing in his quarters, contemplating in front of
      his poster of MINMAY. He reaches for it, about to tear it off
      the wall, when the doorbell rings.

HIKARU: (Hearing the doorbell) Coming! (Opens the door.  Surprised)
        Minmay!

      Meanwhile, MISA busily translates the PROTOCULTURE lyrics in
      front of a computer terminal. A few minutes later, HIKARU: is
      making coffee.

HIKARU: You're very busy now, I suppose. By the way, is the melody
        to the song fini--

        MINMAY walks up behind HIKARU and hugs him, wrapping her arms
        around him.  He forgets about the coffee brewing in Mr. Coffee.
        The pot overflows.

HIKARU: (Startled) Minmay...

MINMAY: (Hugging HIKARU) I love you. I don't know what happened
        between you and that woman on that island, but...but I still
        love you.

HIKARU: Minmay, I...

     MISA abruptly walks into the room without even knocking.
     She sees MINMAY hugging HIKARU.

HIKARU: (Surprised) Lieutenant!

      MISA is surprised by this sight of them together.  She
      quickly tries to compose herself, without much success.

MISA: What is this?

HIKARU: What do you mea--

MISA: (Holding out the Protoculture memory card) Do you remember
        this? This is the plate I found in the ruined city.  I found out
        that it contains the lyrics to that melody.

HIKARU: That song?

MISA: (Clearly upset now) I wanted you to confirm it first...but...

     MISA, depressed, leans against HIKARU'S dresser.
     HIKARU tries to comfort her.

HIKARU: (To MISA) Wait!  It's not what you think.  You're misunderstanding.

     This upsets MINMAY.

MINMAY: (Crying) "It's not what you think" `A misunderstanding"?
        I can't take it. I can't.  (She turns and runs out of the room).

HIKARU: Minmay!

MISA: (Bitterly sarcastic) Hurry and go after her.  You two were
        just reunited. Don't hesitate because of me.  It's more
        miserable to be receiving sympathy from you.

HIKARU: That's not it!  That's not what I was thinking!  When the
        two of us wandered on the uninhabited Earth and barely made it
        back on the Macross and heard Minmay's song in town and saw her
        in the screen--that's when I found out. The one who I wanted by
        my side forever--was you. I still feel the same way.

MISA: (Looking at Hikaru tearfully) Honestly?

HIKARU: There's no telling when I might get killed. But if you
        don't mind such a person like me...

MISA: (Crying) What's happening?  Isn't it funny, Hikaru?  Tears
        won't stop flowing from my eyes.

      FLYING HAIR. THE EMBRACE.

HIKARU: Misa...

MISA: Hikaru...

     They begin to kiss, but all of a sudden an alert is sounded.

MISA: It's a RED ALERT . . . priority one!

               *              *              *

      The ship buzzes with ordered activity. Pilots run to their
      fighters. Equipment is checked.  Crew report to their
      stations. Civilians take cover in the city.

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Attention!  Attention!  Take positions for maximum
        impact. This is not a drill. A fold reaction has just been
        identified. Many ships are approaching in a duster formation. We
        are going to have 60 seconds before the Meltrandi warp out.

      HIKARU desperately tries to find MINMAY in all the confusion.
      The attack has begun, and explosions rock the MACROSS.  MISA
      has given him the song lyrics for MINMAY in hopes that it
      will be their one key to survival.  Her words echo in his
      mind.  "Give this song to Minmay. You are the only one who
      can convince her to sing." He climbs the stairs that lead to
      the observation deck he and MINMAY once saw the magnificent
      view of Saturn together. Aboard the flagship, GORG BODOLZA
      watches the beginning of the battle.

BODOLZA: Unthinkable!  The "Leeric" is not created yet?

ZENTRADI: Also, Minmay is reported to be missing.

BODOLZA: Unthinkable!

ZENTRADI: Meltran will de-fold...all Meltran now de-folded.

      The ZENTRADI FLEET is amassed and now ready to destroy the
      MELTRANDI FLEET and the MACROSS by force. BODOLZA has planned
      to use the ancient PROTOCULTURE song as a weapon to defeat
      the MELTRANDI, but the MACROSS has failed to produce the
      lyrics in time. Without the song, he has no use for the
      MACROSS anymore.

BODOLZA: If the song is incomplete, then we cannot make Meltran
        surrender.  Therefore, we must annihilate them. Target; the
        MACROSS and Lapramiz's fleet.  All Zentran will fight.

      Aboard the MACROSS, CAPTAIN GLOVAL prepares for a final
      showdown with the ZENTRADI and MELTRANDI.

GLOVAL: It could only have been a short peace, after all. (To the
        bridge crew) Lift off immediately!  Let's get out of here!

      The MACROSS takes off of the island just as the ZENTRADI BEAM
      BOMBING annihilates ALTILLA.  The expanding blast wave rocks
      the MACROSS.

HIKARU: (Stumbling) It has begun!

      On board the MELTRANDI flagship, their SUPREME COMMANDER
      LAPRAMIZ, herself a MOBILE FORTRESS, gives orders for their
      attack on the ZENTRADI.

LAPRAMIZ: (Cursing) Enemy Bodolza!

      HIKARU is still climbing the stairs that lead to where MINMAY
      might be. As he runs, his mind flashes back over all the
      strange events that have occurred over the past few months.
      He finds MINMAY sitting on the bench by the large observation
      window where they had watched Saturn, as he expected.

MINMAY: Hikaru...

HIKARU: Minmay!

MINMAY: You came...you came for me.

HIKARU: (Trying to hand Minmay the translated song lyrics that Misa
        has prepared) I want you to sing this song.

MINMAY: (Yelling in rejection) What is that?  Why must I sing the
        song that woman found?

      Cut to BODOLZA.

ZENTRADI: We can only fire once because of the damage in the
        stabilization circuit.

BODOLZA: Immediate victory awaits.

ZENTRADI: But there are ten of thousands of our ships in the line of fire.

BODOLZA: Immediate victory awaits!  Fire!

      A great energy bolt leaps out of the center of BODOLZA'S huge
      SHIP. It finds its mark and destroys MELTRANDI LEADER
      LAPRAMIZ'S SHIP.  The energy rips through her SHIP and
      annihilates her.

BRITAI: (Objecting to Bodolza's merciless sacrifice of thousands of
        his ships) Unthinkable!

LAPRAMIZ: (Screaming in disbelief) Unthinkable!

      On the observation deck, Hikaru tries to convince Minmay so
      sing.

MINMAY: Just by singing that?  There is no possibility we could win with
        such a thing! (Grasping HIKARU) Just stay here with me if we're
        going to die anyway.

HIARU: It's not just our problem. It is for everyone on board the Macross.

MINMAY: That has nothing to do with us at all. Why aren't we two the only
        ones in the world? I wish everyone will die except you and me!

      SLAP!

HIKARU: (Holding his hand, looking away) Roy died.  Kakizaki died.
        They all died. They must have left many things they wanted to
        have done.  You can still sing, can't you?

      MINMAY holds her cheek, crying. All of a sudden a huge
      explosion rips the external shutter away, exposing them to
      the battle outside.  The gravity gives out. The two float and
      hold hands.

MINMAY: I'm sorry Hikaru.  I don't know what got into me. I choose
        a singing career for myself. If I don't sing, my mother and
        father who passed away will not be able to rest in peace. I'll
        sing with all my heart!

               *              *              *

      MINMAY stands on a special stage, below the MACROSS' huge
      bridge area with a grand view of space. She has a microphone
      in hand, dressed to give her greatest performance ever. This
      song will be broadcast to everyone, including the ZENTRADI
      and MELTRANDI. HIKARU is launched into space in his VALKYRIE
      to fight his greatest battle ever.

      SONG LYRICS:
          I hear your voice now, saying "come here,"
          When I'm about to be overcome by sadness...

   Aboard a MELTRANDI BATTLE CRUISER, COMMANDER MIRIA prepares to
   enter her BATTLE SUIT.  She is startled by the song. She turns
   to MAX, >>Probably married to Miria by now (and certainly as large
   as her) to take responsibility for defeating her. Yes, she would
   be a HEAVY responsibility to take care of.  BTW, what is the
   opposite of "micronization"?  "Zentradization"?<< also about
   to enter his MELTRANDI BATTLE SUIT, for an explanation.

      SONG LYRICS
          I see your figure now, walking toward me,
          As I wait with my eyes close...

MIRIA: What is this?

MAX: (Surprised) It's Minmay singing!  (They continue with their
   preparations for battle.)

      Cut to BRITAI'S BATTLE CRUISER.

BRITAI: This is strange.  This song. I feel as though I heard it a
        long time ago. Why?

      SONG LYRICS:
          My heart that was clouded with tears, until yesterday is now.
          Do you remember the moment when our eyes first met?

EXEDOR: I have found the answer. The Culture of those who provided
        our gene is being awakened . . .

BRITAI: What?

EXEDOR: Over the interval of 500,000 cycles.

      SONG LYRICS:
          Do you remember the moment our hands touched?
          It was the first glow of love between you and me...

BRITAI: Can Culture be brought back to us?

      SONG LYRICS:
          I love you so.

      As the MACROSS flies though the battle, beams from the
      ZENTRADI rip through the ship into MACROSS CITY, causing mass
      destruction.  A ZENTRADI BATTLE CRUISER prepares to ram the
      MACROSS head on. But it is blown apart...all of a sudden by
      BRITAI'S SHIP. On the bridge of the MACROSS, they receive a
      message from BRITAI.

BRITAI: BRITAI 7018 to MACROSS we will protect you from now on.

GLOVAL: Protect us?

EXEDOR: We cannot allow the Culture of Protoculture to be lost.

      BRITAI brings his SHIP alongside the MACROSS.  Other ships,
      both ZENTRADI and MELTRANDI, do likewise. They are forming an
      Armada to reclaim what they have been missing for 500,000
      years..."Culture," as they call it.

BRITAI: (Announcing to all) To all listening to Lynn Minmay's song:
        we have only one enemy: defeat Gorg Bodolza and bring Culture
        back to us.

      MINMAY is overjoyed over BRITAI'S announcement.  She tries to
      hold back her tears that flow from the excitement.

      SONG LYRICS:
          I can see your eyes now, even if we're separated,
          Making my body warm up...

      BODOLZA also hears MINMAY'S song.

BODOLZA: So, this is Lynn Minmay's song.

      Ships attack the BODOLZA MOBILE FORTRESS like a swarm of
      wasps.  The fighting is heavy, and the newly united forces
      meet with heavy resistance.  MAX and MIRIA advance as a
      deadly team, as they enjoy each other's fighting.  HIKARU
      blasts away, while MINMAY continues to sing.

      SONG LYRICS:
          Now I believe in your love.
          Although you are far away, please protect me...

      MISA looks at HIKARU in his VALKYRIE from the bridge of the
      MACROSS. He TRANSFORMS to BATTLE mode to salute her.

      SONG LYRICS:
          Until yesterday, my world was clouded with tears.
          Do you remember when our eyes first met?
          Do you remember the moment our hands touched?
          That was the first glow of love between you and me.
          I love you so.
          I'm not alone anymore, Because you are here.
          Do you remember when our eyes first met?

      HIKARU TRANSFORMS back into FIGHTER mode and flies on a final
      mission.  The battle has opened the way for HIKARU to fly
      inside the BODOLZA MOBILE FORTRESS and attempt to destroy
      him. MINMAY continues to sing as HIKARU flies through many
      maze-like tunnels, sometimes using missiles to blast his way
      through. >>One of the missiles he shoots is a sake bottle.
      Another is a Budweiser beer can.<<

      SONG LYRICS:
          I'm not alone anymore, Because you are here.

MISA: (Giving Hikaru the coordinate for the final target)
        Main target is at A-133 Z-165.

      SONG LYRICS:
          I'm not alone anymore...

      HIKARU flies in front of GORG BODOLZA'S face.  He is open to
      the attack.  The VALKYRIE transforms into BATTLOID mode.
      Using every single firearm on his VF-1S SUPER VALKYRIE,  >>At
      last, the kid gets to ride a real VF-1S.<<  he shoots at
      BODOLZA'S head. BODOLZA dies a painful death.

BODOLZA: (Dying) Protoculture!

      SONG LYRICS:
          Because you are here.

      The MOBILE FORTRESS begins to disintegrate. The giant
      pumpkin-like hull implodes, while other parts of the SHIP
      explode.  Nothing is left but the skeleton of the structure.
      HIKARU still stands in the same spot where he has killed
      BODOLZA.

HIKARU: Skull One to Delta One; mission accomplished. I'm coming home.

MISA: (Overjoyed) This is Delta One...acknowledged!

      GLOVAL and members of the bridge crew slump in their chairs
      with relief. The war is over. Throughout the MACROSS and
      MACROSS CITY, people cheer at the top of their lungs.
      Meanwhile, on the bridge of BRITAI'S SHIP...

EXEDOR: The real hardship starts now.

BRITAI: (Brought out of his thoughts) Hmm?

EXEDOR: Even in this galaxy alone, there are supposed to be over a
        thousands fleets lead by mobile fortresses of Bodolza-and
        Lapramiz-class in action.

BRITAI: But a single song could bring all this change. We can only
        believe in the power of Culture.

      From her position on the stage below the bridge, MINMAY looks
      up and meets MISA'S gaze.  They stare, smiling at each other.
      MINMAY holds up her hand, waving the song sheet with MISA'S
      translation. MISA replies in silence.

CLAUDIA: (To MISA) What was that song, after all?

MISA: Just a popular tune.

CLAUDIA: A tune?

MISA: Just an ordinary love song that was popular in the aliens'
        city tens of thousands of years ago.

      Later, MINMAY stands alone on a dark stage, deep in thought,
      tapping the toe of one shoe in time with the beat she is saying aloud.

MINMAY: (Tapping her foot) One, two, three, four...one, two, three, four...

      She goes on like this for several seconds and then explodes
      into one final song, the closing theme for the film. The
      accompanying band is almost assuredly a mixture of human and
      ZENTRADI musicians. HIKARU and MISA are probably in the
      audience, newly wed or engaged, enjoying their anonymity in
      the crowd for the time being.

MINMAY: One, two, three, four...AH ONE TWO!

      SONG LYRICS:
          When I look up at the sky,
          Breathing in the shining wind,
          that Lands on the window sash reflecting the twilight,
          And my heart the unhappy incidents stained blue
          I will repaint with the angel's paint,
          Any way I want.
          When we first met, I was even drawn to Space.
          Without noticing the love that always protected me,
          I said good-bye to you, and
          "I love you."
          Will this feeling become tears
          If I look away, everything will leave me.
